McLaren's Lewis Hamilton has jumped to the top of the Formula One championship table at the halfway stage thanks to a brilliant drive at a wet Silverstone yesterday.
Hamilton shares top spot with the Ferrari's of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen. The McLaren driver was under immense pressure heading into the British Grand Prix, with his home media slaughtering him after his blunder at the Canadian Grand Prix and his tenth place at the French race two weekends ago.
In qualifying, Hamilton was there or thereabout just quietly going about his business while his teammate Heikki Kovalainen stole most of the limelig! ht with his consistently fast qualifying times. But Hamilton came good when it mattered and led his home grand prix from practically start to finish thanks to a great start, an overtaking manoeuvre on Kovalainen and a superior wet-weather strategy.
Ferrari were nowhere with some describing Massa's performance as amateurish at best.
With nine more races to go, the championship is still wide open but in terms of being able to stand up in the face of adversity, I'm backing Hamilton to take his maiden world championship.
